How we collect, use and protect the personal information of our members.

Who we are

Wakarimu Savings & Credit Co-operative Society Limited ("Wakarimu Sacco", "we", "us") is a co-operative society registered under the Co-operative Societies Act, registration number CS/5626. We are the data controller for the personal information described in this policy.

The information we collect

We collect the information you give us when you apply for membership, apply for a loan, guarantee another member's loan, or contact us.

  • Identity details: your full name, national ID or passport number, date of birth, nationality and photograph
  • Contact details: postal address, physical address, telephone numbers and email address
  • Family and next-of-kin details: marital status, spouse's name and the nominees you declare
  • Employment and business details: employer, department, terms of employment, and business information where you are self-employed
  • Financial details: your deposits, share capital, income, loan applications, repayments and guarantees

Why we use your information

  • To register and administer your membership of the society
  • To assess, appraise, approve and administer loan applications
  • To verify guarantors and confirm security for loans
  • To pay dividends and interest, and to maintain your member statements
  • To comply with the Co-operative Societies Act, our by-laws and other legal obligations
  • To contact you about your account, the Annual General Meeting and society notices

The lawful basis for processing

We process your personal data on the basis of the contract of membership between you and the society, our legal and regulatory obligations, our legitimate interests in running the society soundly, and — where required — your consent.

Sharing your information

We do not sell your personal data. We share it only where it is necessary and lawful to do so.

  • With other members who act as your guarantors, to the extent needed to confirm the guarantee
  • With our auditors, insurers and professional advisers, under a duty of confidentiality
  • With the Commissioner for Co-operative Development and other authorities where the law requires it
  • With banks and payment providers to process deposits and disbursements

How long we keep it

We keep member records for as long as you remain a member, and afterwards for the period required by the Co-operative Societies Act and our by-laws, together with any period needed to resolve outstanding obligations or disputes.

Keeping your information safe

We apply administrative, physical and technical safeguards to protect member records against loss, misuse and unauthorised access. Access is limited to staff and officials who need it to perform their duties.

Your rights

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019 you have the right to be informed about how your data is used, to access the personal data we hold about you, to have inaccurate data corrected, to request deletion where the law allows, to object to certain processing, and to lodge a complaint with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised, and material changes will be communicated to members.
